Major debate on state pensions on the horizon

 

A major public debate is due to begin in the Island next year over state pensions.

 

Social Care Minister Chris Robertshaw says costs are spiralling and without change, the retirement pension in its current form is in jeopardy.

 

Government is keeping a close eye on changes in the UK - because of a reciprocal arrangement with the Isle of Man.

 

In his autumn statement this month, UK Chancellor George Osborne announced plans to bring forward the date when the pension age rises to 68.

 

It was due to kick-in in 2046, but will now apply in the mid-2030s.

 

Mr Robertshaw says the idea of a 'pension age' itself needs to be looked at afresh:
