Man caught smoking cannabis at busy TT venue

John Steve Dugan pleaded guilty to possessing £10 worth of drug

Around £10 of cannabis has cost a Douglas man £300 after he smoked a joint at one of the busiest TT venues on the Island.

Forty-year-old John Steve Dugan of Hutchinson Square appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas Courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to one count of possessing cannabis resin in Bushy’s TT Village on Monday, 3 June.

Prosecution advocate James Robinson said a member of the public told police officers they’d spotted Dugan smoking cannabis in front of the main stage in the Villa Marina Gardens.

When officers searched Dugan, they found 1.8 grammes of cannabis worth around £10, which he said a stranger had given to him.

He told police the drugs were for his own use and he’d forgotten slipping the lump into his pocket.

Mrs Hughes told him an aggravating feature of the case was the fact he’d been on licensed premises at the time, and the site was full of visitors during the TT festival.

She imposed a £300 fine and also ordered Dugan to pay prosecution costs of £50.
