Man jailed after fleeing car crash

Galbraith denies all charges

A Douglas man who fled after a crash wrote off a car at a busy junction has been sent to jail.

Paul James Galbraith of Derby Road appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse via a live video link from prison.

He'd denied driving without due care and attention while uninsured, failing to report a crash, produce his driving licence or change his car's ownership, and having two faulty tyres.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the hearing Galbraith was driving along Circular Road at around 5.30pm on 16 May, 2019.

As he turned into Westmoreland Road in his black VW Golf, he misjudged the manoeuvre and crashed into an oncoming Jaguar, writing the other car off.

He promised to hand over his details, but drove off, leaving his licence plate behind.

Police later found him in a lane behind Peel Road in Douglas repairing damage to his car – and he told officers he’d let someone take it on a test drive.

Mrs Hughes imposed a 12-week jail term and banned him from the roads for a year.
