£31,000 taken from international travellers
A man who conned TT visitors around the world out of more than £30,000 won't go to prison.
Ian Charles Moffitt of Randalstown in County Antrim appeared before Deemster Cook at Douglas Courthouse.
He’d previously admitted four specimen charges of fraud by false representation in 2018.
The court heard he’d taken £31,000 in bookings from visitors in Canada, Greece, Denmark and the UK for the 2019 festival.
His company had been told it couldn’t use the Onchan FC fields on Blackberry Lane despite advertising it online, and another company had to step into the breach when the con was uncovered, offering visitors alternative accomodation for free.
Deemster Cook told the 37 year old his crime had threatened to undermine people’s confidence in the TT.
He handed Moffitt a 20-month jail term, suspended for two years.
Moffitt was also ordered to repay more than £12,000 after the court heard a travel company had already sued him to recover lost money.
