Manx Grand Prix to get underway

Roads close at 12:45pm as qualifying week starts

The Manx Grand Prix gets underway today with roads closing around the Mountain Course at 12:45pm ahead of the first practice.

It's the first time the event has returned to the Island since the start of the Covid pandemic.

Clerk of the Course Gary Thompson issued an appeal for more marshals to register ahead of today's session.

The TT Marshals Association says they've now reached the numbers for today's session, but would encourage anyone available to marshal over the next nine days to register an interest.

Mr Thomspon spoke to Manx Radio ahead of today's practice:

The Newcomers' Speed Control Lap starts proceedings at 1:30pm, followed by the Senior & Classic Superbike at 1:45pm.

At 3:30pm it's the turn of the Junior, Lightweight & Classic Senior.

Roads are to reopen no later than 6pm.

The man with political responsibility for motorsport, Rob Callister, has apologised for not being able to attend this year's MGP as he's attending a conference in Canada.

The Onchan MHK says it's great to have this important event back on the sporting calendar and has credited the Manx Motorcycle Club for working 'tirelessly' to ensuring this year's event is ready to go.
