MHK queries why DoI is spending £30K 'fixing a problem that doesn't exist'

Tynwald dismisses amendment brought forward by Speaker

Proposals to include local authorities, MHKs and school teachers in conversations about road safety have been dismissed by Tynwald.

Rushen MHK Juan Watterson asked his fellow politicians to back his idea for more input about new 20mph zones in residential areas.  

The Department of Infrastructure is looking at the implementation of the restrictions and will report back to the court in June; something the minister has described as ‘reaffirming settled policy’.

Mr Watterson says he doesn’t want to see Port St Mary ‘littered with signs and roundels’ and simply wants a ‘school zone’ and safe crossing points around the primary school instead:

Mr Watterson was supported in his proposed amendment by fellow Rushen MHK Dr Michelle Haywood, who told Manx Radio government’s ‘lack of focus’ on safety around a primary school in her constituency is ‘almost criminal’.

But following the debate in Tynwald on Tuesday, Infrastructure Minister Chris Thomas insisted MHKs need to listen to professional opinion:
