More than 1,200 classroom hours lost due to period pains

Student calls for more support for female pupils

More than 1,200 learning hours are lost at the Island's largest secondary school each year due to period pains.

That's the finding of research by a Ballakermeen High School student, who's calling for more to be done to support girls in school during their periods.

Lucie Hepworth says 255 female students have to go home due to period pains each academic year.

The issue was discussed with Manx politicians last week where female students highlighted issues such as catcalling, uniform policies, period poverty and support for young girls in the work place.

On Friday, which also marked International Women's Day, Isabelle, Lucie, Jessica and Ania took part in a mini debate in chambers and also joined an online plenary session with young females across the Commonwealth.

They found:

  • Over 60 percent of girls under the age of 17 are catcalled
  • 255 female students at their school leave early due to period pains - which results in 1,275 learning hours lost
  • 96 percent say their uniform is pointed out to them by members of staff which results in them missing their lessons or not making it in time for lessons.
