MU Chair denies direct responsibility for Laxey flooding

Hole in wall a contributory factor - but rainfall had been exceptional

The Chair of Manx Utilities has denied the authority is entirely to blame for yesterday's devastating flooding in Laxey.

People had to be evacuated from flooded homes, others were trapped inside and cars were swept along Glen Road which was deluged with a raging torrent of water.

The clean-up operation is continuing this morning.

However, questions are now being asked about a hole which had been knocked through the river wall to allow a digger access to carry out repair works on the weir.

Speaking on Mandate this morning, Dr Alex Allinson said he was very sorry for all those who had been flooded and paid tribute to the rescue efforts which had been carried out.

He believes the work being carried out may have been a contributory factor to the flooding - but hadn't been the main problem:
