New head teachers appointed at Ballakermeen and QE2

Two candidates from the Isle of Man selected

Two of the Isle of Man's secondary schools have today announced the appointments of their new head teachers.

It's as Adrienne Burnett of Ballakermeen High School in Douglas and Sue Moore of Queen Elizabeth II High School in Peel are both due to retire at the end of the school year.

Both have been in their respective roles for more than 20 years.

Taking over from Mrs Burnett at Ballakermeen in September is Graeme Corrin who's moving south from Ramsey Grammar School where he was second in command.

Meanwhile, taking over from Mrs Moore at QE2 is Charlotte Clarke, who was previously the head of a secondary school in North Yorkshire, and has more recently been teaching children with additional educational needs at Ballakermeen.

Both positions were advertised in February with the top salary for Ballakermeen set at £115,483 and £90,379 for QE2.

Mr Corrin says to be entrusted with the leadership of Ballakermeen is a 'privilege' and says he's 'looking forward to working with the many people, both within the school and the wider community who clearly care so much about it and the futures of our young people.'

While Mrs Clarke has described accepting the role as an 'honour' and says she's delighted to be returning to the school she once attended as a student. She says she's 'aware how integral QEII is to the community' and is 'looking forward to developing positive relationships and building on its successes.'

Education Minister Julie Edge says she's 'confident' they've found the right candidates and has wished both Adrienne and Sue 'a long and happy retirement.'

Mr Corrin was born in the Isle of Man and was taught at Ramsey Grammar School. He studied History and PE at Edge Hill University before completing a PGCE the following year in Manchester.
His teaching career began at Broad Oak High School in Bury in 1995 before returning to RGS in 2007 as Assistant Headteacher and then being promoted to Deputy Headteacher.
He has also completed a National Professional Qualification in Headship and was acting Headteacher at RGS for 5 months following the retirement of the former Headteacher in 2020.
Likewise, Mrs Clarke was born in the Isle of Man and was taught at St John’s Primary School and Queen Elizabeth II High School.
She completed a degree in Physical Education at Leeds Carnegie University, later becoming a Specialist Leader in Education and was awarded a Diploma in Education by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and the National Professional Qualification in Headship.
