New measures on the way to tackle domestic violence

DHA Minister promises additional legal powers

The Department of Home Affairs is preparing to introduce additional legal powers for the courts and police to help tackle the issue of domestic violence.    

In Tynwald this morning (17 April) DHA Minister Bill Malarkey confirmed public consultation will take place before the end of this year on two new bills.

The legislation is aimed at addressing both coercive behaviour and domestic violence within a household.

It comes as local charity Safe, Strong, Secure has campaigned for tougher penalties for those convicted of domestic abuse.

The Minister told the Court, in response to a question by MLC Kate Lord-Brennan, he hopes the proposed new laws will be debated in parliament before 2019:
