New Zealand trip essential says DHSC Chief

The Department of Health and Social Care's chief executive has defended the senior team's trip to New Zealand.

Mark Charters joined minister Howard Quayle on the trip to find out more about the country's use of the Canterbury model.

The model aims to stop large numbers of people being treated in hospital for preventable diseases, and improve the treatment of other conditions through care in the community.

Mr Charters says, even though regions of the UK are using the system, the only real way to find out about the model was by going to New Zealand:
