The Island's director of public transport says Boxing Day bus services this year are not economically viable.
Ian Longworth says putting on even a skeleton service on the bank holiday would cost the department £8,000 for revenue likely to be less than a quarter of that figure.
The cost is partly the result of bank holiday rates agreed with drivers.
Mr Longworth predicts fewer people would use the bus than on a normal Sunday anyway, as many shops will not be open this Boxing Day.
He says he and his colleagues had a long hard look at realistic numbers of passengers, and concluded the numbers don't stack up:
