Occupant of Douglas property given oxygen after house fire

Firefighters say incident highlights importance of working smoke detectors

The occupant of a property in Douglas had to be helped from the house by firefighters, and given oxygen therapy at the scene, earlier today (9 March).

Two appliances were mobilised after reports of an alarm sounding and a smell of smoke at a residential property.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly identified the cause of the smoke to be burnt food.

The Fire Service says the call to the emergency services was made by a neighbour who was alerted to the incident by a smoke detector. This, and the quick arrival of the Fire Service, prevented the situation escalating.

The incident, they say, highlights the importance of working smoke alarms, which give early warning to occupants when there is a fire, enabling them to exit the property in the early stage of a blaze.

Fire Crews were at the scene for an hour and used ventilation equipment to clear the property of smoke.
