Offender back in jail

A 23 year-old man who had just been released from custody in the Isle of Man is back behind bars after committing a number of offences in Northern Ireland.

Adam Cowin admitted five charges at Fermanagh Magistrates Court, soon after moving from the Island to Belnaleck.

The court heard he tried to grab the gear lever in a taxi which had picked him up, and brandished a screwdriver.

A short time later, he terrorised a nearby household after walking in and damaging a partition inside.

Police told the court they found Cowin in a shed at the back of the house. When he was arrested he became aggressive towards officers, kicking out in the car and spitting at them.

District Judge Liam McNally heard he eventually had to be restrained for his own safety, and that of officers, but remained aggressive.

Garry Smyth, defending, said Cowin had been in trouble before, had a troubled life and had only recently moved from the Isle of Man after a spell in custody.

Cowin was jailed for a total of four months for possessing an offensive weapon, two offences of assaulting police, unlawfully interfering with the controls of a motor vehicle and a further charge of assault.

The offences were committed in June.
