Police say they are hoping to find out how a woman came to be in Douglas harbour on Sunday night.
Constable David Schumacher leapt into the icy water at around 10pm, after hearing her cries for help.
He assisted her until a coastguard crew plucked her to safety, but the reason she needed rescuing is still unclear.
