OFT: gas charge demo 'won't work'

Peaceful protest planned at Keys this month

The Office of Fair Trading claims a planned demonstration against Manx Gas' standing charges 'won't change anything'.

Customers will launch a 'peaceful protest' outside the House of Keys on Tuesday, 19 September, after members of an online consumers' group shared copies of their gas bills - many of which saw them paying more in standing charges than for the gas itself.

However, OFT chairman Martyn Perkins MHK says public protests of that kind will not make a difference.

The standing charge structure, which is said to cover administration and supply costs, was introduced in January this year.

Manx Gas claims it spreads customers' costs across the year, reducing the average bill by 11.7% - although those planning to protest disagree.

Mr Perkins says Manx Gas has long held a profit-capping agreement with the body, and a few naysayers are not likely to change that:
