Panel dismisses complaints against Fynoderee

Product accused of appealing to children

An independent industry watchdog has dismissed grievances from a rival manufacturer against one of Fynoderee's products.

The Portman Group received an official complaint from Kella Distillers, based in Sulby, which claimed the packaging of Fynoderee's Manx Bumbee Vodka is appealing to children.

Kella argued the label's imagery and font appealed to consumers under the legal drinking age of 18, and that the name of the product was inspired by a children's fairytale.

The independent complaints panel found the product was based on folklore rather than a fairytale, and noted that folklore tales do not have the same resonance with children that classic fairytales do.

It also found the word 'Fynoderee' was "more strongly associated" with the distillery's range, than with the folklore from which the name is borrowed.

Thirdly, the panel concluded the label advertised the product's contents appropriately, and that the 'bumbee' creature had a mature theme.

Ultimately, Portman Group dismissed the complaint in its entirety.
