Pay settlement reached

A pay dispute involving health and social care staff has been settled by arbitration.

An independent arbiter’s ruled around 1,500 workers should receive 20 pence more per hour for 2011/12 and a one-off lump sum of £400 for 2012/13.

Some nurses, midwives and staff in psychology and social care will receive the money but the deal does not include civil servants or manual workers under the Whitley Council.

Both Health Minister David Anderson and Social Care Minister Chris Robertshaw say - after initial failure to agree a settlement - they’re pleased the issue has been resolved to reward staff for their excellent work.

However, they admit finding the money will put a strain on the department budgets and reducing the wage bill remains a serious challenge for the Manx government.
