Peel Castle jetty closure due to 'public safety concerns'

Large crack found at end of structure

The jetty at Peel Castle has been closed for several months after a 'large crack' was found at the end of the structure.

It's said to be visible from the water rather than surface level, and Herras Fencing was installed to prevent parking and public access.

A Freedom of Information request response has revealed the closure was agreed between the Island's Highways and the Harbours Divisions 'for public safety until repairs have been completed'.

It also reveals that concerns were being raised over the damage being worsened by heavy vehicles and plant being parked on the jetty.

No formal order or written risk assessment was undertaken as the closure was 'mutually agreed between Harbours and Highways Divisions based on public safety concerns'.

The Department of Infrastructure has confirmed designs for the pier's repair have now been finalised and capital funding will be sought from Treasury.
