Peel silt storage facility could be made permanent

DoI withdraws previous planning application and submits new ones

Government has confirmed plans for a silt storage facility near Peel to be made permanent.

Rockmount near Poortown Quarry is where silt dredged from Peel Marina in 2015 was put, for an initially agreed period of five years.

It's been decided that since the site is now a stable habitat, it's best to leave it undisturbed and a planning application was made in July 2020 to make the site permanent.

Since then, there's been consultation with environmental officials, and new plans have been submitted.

The revised scheme will ensure the long-term stability of the area, with gas and ground-water boreholes installed to enable long-term monitoring.

You can find the full planning application here.

The application follows current UK practice for the management of landfill sites and will ultimately allow it to return to agricultural use.

In spring last year 37,000 tonnes of silt was taken from Peel Marina and moved to a temporary pool in a field upstream just beyond the Power Station.

A permanent site for this is being considered, but it has been confirmed it will not be Rockmount.
