Plans for Douglas Head conservation area on hold

Consultation closed in September with 61 responses

A government minister says there is no immediate plan to make Douglas Head a conservation area.

It follows an independent report and a consultation on the matter which closed in September.

From 61 responses to the question 'Should Douglas Head be a conservation area?', 47 said yes, 12 said no and 2 did not answer.

Culture Vannin cites the area's registered buildings, diversity of use through history and landscape as reasons why Douglas Head should become a conservation area.

Douglas Borough Council is also in favour of the move.

Meanwhile, the Department for Environment Food and Agriculture says it does not think the area is architecturally special or historically interesting enough.

Answering a written question from Juan Watterson SHK, Cabinet Office Minister Kate Lord-Brennan said a 'strategic approach' looking to reappraise all current and potential conservation areas is being pursued.

Proposals were originally put forward in 2018 by Charles Guard and David Wertheim.
