Police using extra powers sparingly, says chief constable

Isle of Man Constabulary enforcing law not guidance

The head of the Island's police force insists his officers are using their powers sparingly to enforce the emergency coronavirus measures.

Tynwald approved the introduction of a fixed penalty fine for those found to be breaching social distancing rules earlier this week, which is expected to be in force by the weekend.

Chief Constable Gary Roberts says there's a difference between the law and guidance, and that the Isle of Man Constabulary will focus on enforcing the law.

He explained there's no joy being taken from the additional powers:
