Professionals not police should deal with mental health issues

Former inspector says force shouldn't be first contact

A former police inspector says the force shouldn't be the first point of contact for those with mental health issues.

Derek Flint, who left the Constabulary in May this year, gave evidence yesterday (6 Dec) to the Social Affairs and Policy Review Committee, on mental health provision.

He explained officers are often first on the scene to deal with incidents, yet in almost all cases a medical professional would be more appropriate.
