Rare photo archive of capital on display

Aerial shots from 1935

There's a chance to see rare photos of Douglas in its tourism heyday, in a unique display from today (9 Oct).

A set of promotional aerial shots of the capital taken in 1935, have been unearthed from the council's archive, digitised and printed.

They show a well-planned, clean and tidy townscape, well-known landmark and buildings which have now disappeared, along with a  promenade and beach thronging with holiday makers.

The images are being displayed in the town hall as part of this weekend's Heritage Open Days.

Council leader David Christian says it's a step back in time:

The photo display, council chamber, Mayor's parlour and committee room are all open to the public today and tomorrow (9 and 10 Oct) as part of the Manx National Heritage open day programme, 11am - 2pm.

Admission is free.
