Rushen Silver Band anniversary service today

Rushen Silver Band/Fleshwick Beach

1940s Fleshwick tradition to be revisited

Today, a musical institution in the south of the Island is revisiting a tradition that dates back to the 1940s.

In 1949, Surby Silver Band changed its name to Rushen Silver Band, making this year its 70th anniversary.

From before the name change, the band used to march to Fleshwick beach every year on Good Friday and perform at a short service, the event having been initiated by the Sailors Chapel Mission Band from Liverpool who used to visit the Island.

Since then, the event had lapsed - until now.

Today, in honour of those Surby showmen, a short service will be held at 3 o'clock at Fleshwick beach, with the brass musicians playing hymns and music.

People attending are being asked to meet at Ballafesson Chapel from 2pm, from which groups will take a short walk to the beach. For people preferring not to walk, transport will be provided.
