Seagulls grounded by mystery pollutant

The MSPCA has been helping more than 40 seagulls back into the air, after they became coated in a mysterious oily substance.

The feathered friends were found covered in pollution in Peel on Thursday.

They were stranded on land behind the House of Mannanan, where they were caught and taken to the MSPCA to be bathed.

The oil stopped the gulls flying away, but some jumped into the river, and coastguard volunteers helped retrieve them.

MSPCA animal care officer Jennie Cryer says efforts are being made to find the source of the oil:
