Isle of Man Constabulary dismiss officer convicted of data breach

A police officer who breached GDPR legislation after disclosing personal data to a family member has been sacked.

The Isle of Man Constabulary has confirmed Richard Alan Cretney has been dismissed without notice following a special case misconduct hearing.

The 46-year-old was convicted at Douglas Courthouse, on 15 September, after pleading guilty to one offence of breaching the law.

Police say the misconduct hearing, which concluded on Thursday (8 October), found the sergeant’s conduct had breached the standards of professional behaviour.

Superintendent Dave Dobbie, of the Professional Standards Department, said: “Police officers occupy a position of trust and the public is entitled to expect the highest standards of conduct from them.

“This case demonstrates that where an officer fails to meet those standards, the constabulary will take appropriate action.

“Allegations of misconduct will be dealt with promptly, fairly and transparently, with due process followed throughout.

“I want to acknowledge the professionalism and determination of the officers who investigated both the criminal and the conduct matters.

“Their work has helped ensure accountability and maintain the standards expected of the Isle of Man Constabulary.

“Conduct that undermines the standards of our organisation and the confidence placed in us by the public will not be tolerated.”

Mr Cretney was fined £800 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £600 during his court appearance.
