Service to commemorate 61st anniversary of Winter Hill disaster

Accident remains worst high-ground aviation accident in UK

The Rotary Club of Douglas will mark the 61st anniversary of the Winter Hill plane crash this morning.

Thirty-five Manx residents lost their lives in what remains the UK’s worst high-ground aviation accident, which happened just days after the Munich air crash involving the Manchester United football team.

Of the 42 people who took off from Ronaldsway on the morning of 27 February 1958, just seven survived the horrific crash less than an hour later.

The plane had been carrying a party of local motor traders and colleagues to visit the Exide battery factory in Manchester.

A short, informal service of remembrance will take place at Cooil-y-Ree Park, St. John’s, at 11am, which will remember both those who lost their lives and the residents of Horwich who did so much to help in the rescue efforts.

The service is open to all.

Members of Douglas Rotary travel to Horwich every year in May and lay a wreath at the top of Winter Hill in conjunction with members from Horwich Rotary Club.
