Serving prisoner accused of possessing cannabis

35-year-old allegedly hid 24.8g 'within the cheeks of his bottom'

A serving prisoner has appeared at Douglas Courthouse after being accused of having almost 25 grams of cannabis at the Isle of Man Prison.

Anthony John Richard Lyons entered ‘no plea’ to a charge of possessing the Class B drug with intent to supply.

The 35-year-old was searched by a prison officer, on 21 December last year, after they smelt cannabis – he was allegedly found hiding 11 wraps of it ‘within the cheeks of his bottom’.

The court was told the drugs had a street value of £2,840 with the prosecutor adding: “Drugs of this nature are used as currency in prisons.”

Mr Lyons’ advocate disputed the value adding: “I believe at the time there was a significant amount of cannabis in the prison.”

Committal proceedings – where the case is elevated to the Court of General Gaol Delivery – will take place on 25 July; he’s been remanded at the Isle of Man Prison.

Update: On 20 June 2023 the prosecution offered no evidence on the charge of possessing cannabis with intent to supply and it was dismissed. Instead Lyons pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing the Class B drug. After learning that he'd spent 30 days in segregation at the prison for this offence Magistrates imposed no separate penalty.
