Sewage works 'sticking point' in Area Plan for North and West

Drop-in sessions in Peel look at government's development plans

Planning officers say sewage treatment is one of the main areas of interest in the Area Plan for the North and West.

Government has published its proposals for development in areas including Peel, Andreas, Ramsey and part of Garff.

Drop-in sessions – where the public are invited to find out more about the plans for housing, employment land, environment and infrastructure – are taking place at the House of Manannan in Peel this week.

Diane Brown is the head of planning policy for the Cabinet Office:

More than 3.7 hectares of land has been allocated for the 'preferred site' for a Regional Sewage Treatment Works in Peel.

Last month the Council of Ministers approved the submission of a motion, going before Tynwald on 19 July, asking for additional funding for those works.

In its latest blog post Manx Utilities says it continues to seek stakeholder engagement in the lead up to that sitting and 'remains committed to delivering the final stages of the Sewage Treatment Strategy for the Island to bring an end to the disposal of raw sewage to sea'.

'Poo and heritage, those are the big things!'

Vicky Gillings, from the Peel Heritage Trust, spoke to the planning officers at the House of Manannan.

Lewis Foster asked her what her main concerns were:

Further drop-in sessions will be held today, tomorrow and Saturday at the House of Manannan - next week they'll move to Ramsey.
