Firefighters have busy day in south
Firefighters have issued more safety advice, after two separate blazes in the south of the Island yesterday.
Crews were called to a grass fire behind the Sound Cafe in Cregneash just before 1.30pm.
Around 65 feet of turf was ablaze, and threatening to ignite a nearby butane gas tank and oil store.
The cause was found to be a hot exhaust pipe from a parked coach.
It was moved to safety just as the flames began to take hold.
Earlier that morning, firefighters had been called to a property in Friary Park, Ballabeg where a backyard bonfire had spread out of control.
The occupant admitted using a petrol product to ignite the fire.
He received minor facial injuries.
The Fire and Rescue Service has issued the following statement:
Burning waste can be a nuisance to neighbours and can also pollute the air by releasing harmful chemicals into it. There may be many toxic chemicals in waste items. Paper waste may contain synthetic materials, preservatives and even plastics. Please use weekly refuse collections or take larger waste items to local civic amenity sites for disposal.
