MNH assessing Island's historic environment

Manx National Heritage says the majority of the Island's heritage sites have had a 'fairly fortunate escape' from the damaging effects of Storm Barra this week.

The organisation has been assessing several sites since severe gales on Tuesday brought trees and walls down, roofs off, and caused disruption around the Island.

It says damage to the Isle of Man’s historic environment seems to be mainly limited to coastal areas so far.

There has been damage to the causeway at St Michael’s Isle though, where walls either side of the access road have been damaged.

Department of Infrastructure engineers will attempt to clear the road in the coming days.

People are asked to avoid visiting the site for the time being.

MNH says it will take time to assess all heritage sites across the Island, and it's encouraging anyone who comes across sites of damage in the next few days, particularly to some of the more remote and less-visited locations, to get in touch.

Meanwhile, as the storm clean-up takes place, insurers says only a small number of claims for damage to property have been received.
