Owners of stray dogs may soon be charged for their return.
The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture is expected to consult soon on plans to charge owners for the collection and return of animals when overnight kennelling has not been necessary.
The announcement follows the recent removal of a private dog warden by DEFA.
From today, the Department’s own staff will carry out what were the warden’s duties during normal working hours.
Outside of these, the service will be operated by the Manx Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and dogs held overnight will be housed at Ard Jekyll.
DEFA says it costs between £100 and £140 for the return of a stray dog, and the introduction of charges will help to recoup some of the cost.
From now on, all strays should be reported day or night to 686688.
