Tall ship crew hopes to work with more Manxies

Phoenix will be back in Manx waters in early next year

The crew of a tall ship that often is seen moored in Port Erin bay is hoping to facilitate more outreach in the local community during its upcoming season.

The Phoenix is a two masted Brig constructed entirely of wood in Frederikshavn, Denmark in 1929.

She began her working life as an evangelical Mission Schooner before retiring from missionary work twenty years later.

She then carried cargo until her engine room was damaged by fire.

Purchased by Square Sail in 1987, a first aid over-haul enabled her to sail back to the UK where she underwent a complete refit.

In 199,1 she was converted to the 15th century Caravel 'Santa Maria' for Ridley Scott's film '1492 Conquest of Paradise' and remained under that guise until 1996 when, due to increasing demand for period square-riggers, she was converted into the two-masted 18th Century Brig she is today, and reverted to her original name ‘Phoenix of Dell Quay'.

You may have seen her on the screen in the BBC's Poldark, Sky's Treasure Island and time-hopping drama Outlander.

She will be back in Manx waters at the beginning of her season (from April) next year.

Captain Joel Edwards says they hope to do more work with disadvantaged young people from the Island:
