Truancy prosecution figures revealed

Parents are being reminded of their legal responsibility to ensure their children attend school regularly.

Education Minister Anne Craine (pictured) has revealed her department has brought a total of 16 prosecutions in the past five years, for failure to comply with the law.

Half of those were in 2005 and so far this year there have been three.

In a written reply to a question from Rushen MHK Quintin Gill, Mrs Craine explains the various warnings and procedures which are followed before matters are taken to court.

In addition, the department has been granted education supervision orders, through the Juvenile Court, in respect of four students since 2005.
