Clerk of TT course 'confident' they'll be no repeat of mistaken identity issue

Gary Thompson highlights raft of changes ahead of this year's event

Significant changes have been made to rules surrounding the identification road racers must carry during practice and race sessions and competitors won’t be allowed to compete unless they comply.

It follows a case of mistaken identity at last year’s TT, during the first sidecar race, after a fatal crash near Ago’s Leap.

The two riders - César Chanal and Olivier Lavorel – were carrying the wrong ID.

Last week the Coroner of Inquests ruled that Mr Chanal had died as a result of misadventure and confirmed there was no evidence to suggest that they’d purposely swapped their dog tags.

Jayne Hughes stopped short of making formal recommendations saying the changes made by the Auto Cycle Union – some of which have already come into force – were welcome.

They include armbands for sidecar drivers and spot checks for all racers before they go to the start line.

She also welcomed a new sidecar working party which has been set up as well as further inspections of machinery and the introduction of more technology for technical officials.
Racers are also being given an additional opportunity to share concerns about the Mountain Course during practice week.

Coroner Hughes told last week's inquest that despite speculation about the road surface near Ago’s Leap, following two fatal crashes in quick succession in the same vicinity, no concerns had been raised.
