'Unemployment utopia' may be threatened

MHK says businesses will feel impact of support withdrawal

The Isle of Man's 'unemployment utopia' may be threatened as businesses attempt to continue without taxpayer backed support.

That's the view of Douglas South MHK Claire Christian in today's Budget debate.

Businesses and individuals have received £132 million of financial assistance over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic but support schemes are now being wound down.

Today Treasury Minister David Ashford raised concerns that many businesses have become 'reliant' on the support.

Mrs Christian, who is also a business owner, said withdrawal of support would likely create future issues:
