Mother would like to see specialist facility for children in crisis

A mother on the Isle of Man has told Manx Radio she believes more support is needed for children going through crisis on the Island.

It follows her personal experience with her daughter.

At times she says they've had to wait up to 10 hours to be seen by medical and care professionals with particular difficulties out-of-hours.

The woman, who has asked to remain anonymous, says it can be 'absolutely devastating':

Growing demand

Manx Care says it's committed to ensuring children and young people can access appropriate mental health support when they need it including during periods of crisis.

In a statement, provided to Manx Radio, it said: "While we are unable to comment on individual cases, we recognise how distressing this can be for families.

"CAMHS provides specialist assessment and care and continues to develop its services to improve access, reduce waiting times and strengthen early intervention.

"A single point of access, via Isle Listen’s ‘Talk’ service, helps direct young people to appropriate support more quickly, alongside services such as Kooth, offering free online counselling.

"CAMHS works closely with the Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment team to support young people, including out-of-hours, with care prioritised based on clinical need.

"Wherever possible care is provided in the least restrictive and most appropriate environment with hospital admission only used when clinically necessary.

"We recognise demand is growing and continue to strengthen pathways including crisis support.

"Manx Care welcomes feedback and encourage patients, families and carers to contact the Manx Care Advice and Liaison Service so that any concerns can be discussed and addressed."

Committee

Earlier this month Manx Care, and the Department of Health and Social Care, gave evidence to the Social Affairs Policy Review Committee.

In the session Manx Care Chief Executive Teresa Cope, and Minister Claire Christian, said the Crisis Response Team and the Home Response Team are constantly meeting targets:
