Wildfire risk 'increased' after unusual warm spell

Fire officer reflects on rural incident

As the Island has experienced an usually warm and dry spell over the weekend, the risk of wildfires in the countryside has increased.

And even with a flurry of rain, that risk will still be in place, according to the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service, if the public act irresponsibly.

Last night, fire crews from both Douglas and Laxey dealt with a large gorse fire in Abbeylands.

Initially a controlled burn instigated by the landowner, it quickly turned into a wildfire following a gust of wind.

Duty Officer Matt Tyrer, who oversaw the response, told Manx Radio the difficulty of tackling the fire was getting to it.
