Work to repair Peel Power Station chimney flues starts

Repairs expected to take five weeks

Work will begin this week to repair the flues atop the chimney stack at Peel Power Station.

After one of the flues failed during Storm Eowyn, checks on the other three showed they needed work as well.

The damaged flue cap was stabilised to ensure safety immediately.

Weather permitting, the whole exercise should last something over five weeks.

Manx Utilities says: 'Surveys and inspections were then carried out to determine the cause of the failure and to establish the condition of the other three flue caps so that a repair plan could be developed.'

'This work was carried out over the summer by specialist steeplejacks, who accessed the flues via internal ladders and secured the structure following a drone-assisted survey.

'With safety assured, planning and fabrication of replacement components has been underway.

'New flue sections are now being manufactured by a local contractor, supporting the Island’s engineering sector.

'Specialist steeplejacks will begin work today (21 October), starting with the installation of a modular frame deck scaffold inside the concrete chimney.'

This, the MUA says, will allow for the safe removal of corroded bolts to prepare the structure for the replacement of the flue sections.

The repair will be carried out in two phases:

Phase 1 – Internal Preparations (Approximately two weeks)

  • Steeplejacks will work primarily inside the chimney.
  • At the end of this phase, the failed flue cap will be craned to the ground, subject to suitable weather conditions.

Phase 2 – Flue Replacement (Approximately three weeks)

  • Scheduled based on a calm weather window.
  • A large crane will be deployed to lift the newly repaired flue sections into position.
