Island Games day two: eleven medals and group stage successes

A look back at a busy day for Team IoM in Guernsey

There were eleven medals, group stage successes and some heartbreak for Team Isle of Man at the Island Games on day two of sporting action. 

There were two golds, four silvers and five bronzes.

Both Manx golds of the day were won in the swimming pool. Laura Kinley won the first in the women’s 50m breaststroke, closely followed by the men’s 4x50m medley relay team. Also in the pool, Peter Allen took silver in the men’s 200m butterfly and Joel Watterson secured bronze in the men's 50m backstroke.

There were two silver medals and one bronze in the archery. The 1440 compound mixed team took silver, as did Aalin George in the women’s event. Rhys Moore took bronze in the men’s 1440 compound.

In athletics, Corrin Leeming won silver and Alan Corlett won bronze in the men’s 10,000m.

There were two bronzes for Team Isle of Man in the shooting. Martin Kneen took bronze in the men’s individual sport trap and Kathryn Holden and Blae Richardson came third in the ISSF 10m air pistol event.

In the group stages of the football events, the Manx women’s team beat the Isle of Wight 5-0. The Manx men were defeated by the Shetlands 3-2.

In basketball, the Isle of Man women’s team beat the Faroes 45-19. The Manx men lost out to Guernsey 83-72.

In Tennis, Sarah Long booked her place in the ladies’ singles round of 16, but Ryan Chinn was knocked out in the men’s round of 64. In Badminton, the Isle of Man was knocked out of the team competition by Greenland. In table tennis, the Isle of Man had wins over the Falkland Islands and Gibraltar.

In the men’s time trial, Will Draper finished 7th. The Isle of Man came fifth in the team event.
