Shock at Ronaldsway Fours

There was an upset in the final of the Ronaldsway Fours on Sunday.

Newcomers Ali Gill and Kriss Spiers, joined by Josh Ffrench and skipped by Jayne Kinley beat the reigning champions Jill Quayle, Moira Anderson, John Jauncey and Eric Maddocks.

Kinley's team started well with a 12-6 victory against Kate Goldsmith, David Hetherington, Robin Teare and Stephen Gale thanks to a flurry of points near the end of the match.

The eventual champions then came from behind again in the second game of the group, beating Chris Holland, Michael Collister, Clare Holland and Collin Holland 8-5 after being 5-4 down with three ends to play.

In the final game of the group, Stephen Gale's team took the two points with an emphatic 12-3 win against Holland's four.

In the other group, Pauline Kelly, Ann Hollingworth, Rita Woodworth and Sylvia Maddrell took the opening game against David Cottier, Peter Coward, Peter Blower and Seamus Whelan with a 9-3 win.

Eric Maddocks' four then then put paid to any hope of Whelan's side progressing to the final with a 7-3 victory before beating Maddrell's four with a nail-biting, last end 5-3 win.

The final saw Kinley's side go 3-0 up, then 4-2 up at the half way stage before Maddocks' team fought back to lead 5-4.

However a five on the penultimate end for Jayne Kinley saw them take firm control of the game and some sensible cautious bowling saw them secure the title with a 9-7 win.
