Snooker: Week 17 sees new highest league break of season

St Olaves take no prisoners against Malew

Week 17 of the Macs Builders Merchants snooker league saw differing fortunes for the joint league leaders.

Finch Hill Rockets 3-2 The Hurricanes

The Hurricanes started the night level top with St Olaves A but slipped to their third defeat in five matches with Steve Munk unable to repeat last week’s match winning performance in the finale. Frame scores, Marek Kenny 84-50 Jamie Wilson, Matt Radley 53-35 Paul Smith, John Spellman 58-67 Stuart Littlewood (20 break), Ron Grogan 84-118 Chris Dagnall (21 break) and Doug Kinrade 80-36 Steve Munk. Hurricanes slip to second and Rockets stay third.

St Olaves A 5-0 Malew

Paul Smyth reports on an important win for St Olaves in their push for the title.

Darrell Thacker 88-68 James Goodwin. Darrell potted well from the start, having a few high teen breaks to take the lead and go on to win. That’s 15 wins out of 16 for the Ramsey player. Paul Smyth 78-49 Alec Oates, was a little bit scrappy from both to start, and the scores stayed close until Paul fluked a brown which turned into a frame winning 22 clearance with three tricky long colours. James Kerr 92-72 Eric Drinkwater, James potted well and caught up quick on Eric’s start with the help of a very well crafted 35. Then, when on the yellow James wasn't thinking and potted the green to foul! Thankfully for him it wasn’t too costly as he pushed on for the win. Dave Kelly 64-29 Mark Quinn. Dave got his eye in first to keep his lead, but Postie did have chances that he would maybe normally pot, but it was Dave extending his lead with the bigger share of the colours for the win. Sean Corkish made it a clean sweep 124-92 over David Quayle. Sean, giving away 91, started well with a 26 after creating his chance. Sean was soon in again and made a beautifully creative 72, almost a clearance, as he missed the final black. That is the highest league break of the season so far. Strangely Malew, who won three early season matches 5-0 have lost the two return fixtures played so far by a similar scoreline. St Olaves A go three points clear and face their longest away day next week at PSM.

Newbys DSB 4-1 Cue Zone Mob

Zain Abideen 55-65 Peter Kirkham. Zain potted blue and pink but left himself too close to the black and jawed it leaving the frame for Peter. Frame two was a walkover win for Newbys following an accidental wrong handicap used by the Mob. Adam Dooley 50-11 Miles Sherman was one of the quickest frames my correspondent had seen Adam just kept knocking them in including a 20 break, Ste MacDonald 62-45 Lee Hunt was a nice efficient frame from Ste and finally Simon Gardner 76-36 Steve Oates could have gone either way, but Steve Oates had no luck going in off a few times and having to get out of at least 3 fluked snookers. Thanks to Simon Gardner for details.

DSB Wannabes 2-3 St Olaves Musicians

Bottom team Wannabes pushed the Musicians all the way but a black ball win for Peter Collister in frame four proved crucial. Frame scores, Harry Minor 74-47 Mike Doherty, Steve Cowin 91-129 John Kennish (40, 36 and 26 breaks), Paul McKinstry 76-28 Vinny Dale, Fred Corris 71-85 Peter Collister and James Teare 54-105 Dave Hanlon. Musicians stay fourth.

Jacksons 2-3 Port St Mary Legion

Four pretty one sided frames before Tony Dhadwal took the last on the black. Frame scores, Paul Kell 49-91 Shaun Roberts (22 break), Lee Gale 62-25 Phil Joynes, Kam Virk 29-62 Dave Pickersgill, Dave Cavanagh 29-68 Marc Morley and Tony Dhadwal 43-40 Terry Boyle.

Peel Legion 4-1 Cue Zone Reprobates

Reprobates made the brave decision to drop Rob Callister, allegedly for the first time in 32 years but it didn’t prevent them slipping to fifth successive defeat. The ‘highlights’ on a night with a distinct end of season feel, (with still nine weeks to go) were Jim Caley blasting the black off the table when on a 25 clearance and Reprobates debutant Chris Killey. Killey momentarily had a 100% pot success rate but was up against it though he did hit a couple of scorching balls to liven things up, slightly. Frame scores, Jim Caley 53-22, John Kelly 56-34 Paul Tangeman, Barton Beaumont 55-29, Tom Curphey 60-32 Ashley Howard and Geoff Hall 23-66 Rhys Moore, the latter potting nicely to prevent the whitewash.
