DID YOU KNOW ?

‘THOUGHT FOR THE DAY’ BROADCAST MONDAY - FRIDAY  ON MANX RADIO IS NOW AVAILABLE AS A WEEKLY PODCAST ?

‘THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK’  is a combination of 5 daily thoughts - all in one handy podcast! Why not give it a try?

ON PRAISE TODAY - 20 OCTOBER

MISSION AVIATION FELLOWSHIP pilots and staff are on the Island this weekend, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the donation of a light aircraft to the international charity, by Ramsey-based business AFD Software.  The Kodiak plane has spent the last ten years helping the people of Kalimantan on the island of Borneo - one of the many vulnerable communities in the world.  Mission Aviation Fellowship believes that every community, however remote, should have the essentials needed for life - and so MAF use their big fleet of light aircraft to deliver food, medical supplies etc., as well as doctors and other healthcare professionals, water engineers and teachers etc.

I talk with Chief Executive Officer of MAF in the UK - Ruth Whitaker, and experienced pilot Steve Machell who is also serving as one of MAF’s Country Directors in Chad, in Africa

Whilst interviewing Ruth and Steve,  I discovered that local teenager Grace Harrison is about to go to Amsterdam for a very special MAF meeting - listen to this week’s programme to find out what it’s all about.

The DISCOVERY AIR PASS which Ruth mentions  - is a series of occasional mailings over a period of one year, explaining about the culture and the conditions in some of the countries served by MAF planes,  and is a great way to find out more about a world which is very different from the one we know.

You can request  a DISCOVERY AIR PASS and find out much more about Mission Aviation Fellowship at their website :-

www.maf-uk.org

Also on the programme,  I meet members of the EAGA  GOSPEL CHOIR - a true community choir, with a place for everyone.  The choir is based in a Leicester church, and they’ve travelled to the Island to compete in the bi-annual Festival of Choirs, winning a place in the final for the Choir of the Festival, by taking top honours in the Open Voice Choir class with an impressive mark of 93!   Their pastor and their Bishop have travelled with them - and share their thoughts on the healing power of music.

MUSIC ON PRAISE TODAY :

is sung by KEITH AND KRISTYN GETTY and all tracks are taken from their CD ‘In Christ Alone - the songs of Stuart Townend

THE ISLAND SPIRITUALITY NETWORK

MEETS AGAIN

ON

SATURDAY 9th  NOVEMBER

in

ST JOHN’S MILL

from 10am - 1pm

Our guest speaker will be GEMMA SIMMONDS CJ - author, lecturer and retreat director.

Gemma's theme for the morning will be “To be a pilgrim - negotiating life today with Ignatius of Loyola”

Gemma says she is excited by the versatility of the spiritual Exercises of Ignatius which provide opportunities for spiritual growth across the various religious and cultural boundaries.

Gemma Simmonds is a sister of the Congregation of Jesus, founded by Mary Ward (1585-1609).  She is a senior lecturer in pastoral theology based at the Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology in Cambridge where she is director of the Religious Life Institute.  She lectured in Christian Spirituality at Heythrop College, University of London from 2005 until its closure in 2018, specializing in Spiritual Direction in the Ignatian tradition.  An international speaker and lecturer working in the fields of Christian spirituality and ecclesiology, she has been a missionary in Brazil and a chaplain in the Universities of Cambridge and London as well as a chaplaincy volunteer in Holloway Prison for 26 years.

Her most recent book, The Way of Ignatius, was published by SPCK for Lent 2019 and was serialised as the Lenten retreat on Pray As You Go, one of the Jesuit media initiatives.

There is no set charge for ISN meetings though a suggested voluntary donation of £10 helps towards expenses. However, no one is EVER asked for money (we just provide a basket for voluntary donations) so please DO NOT stay away for financial reasons.
