AT YOUR SERVICE - 24 JANUARY 2021

At Your Service

Sunday, 24 January 2021 - 30 minutes

Current COVID-19 precautions on the Island mean that we cannot hold our usual National Holocaust Memorial Service - due to be held in St Mary’s Catholic Church, Douglas, this afternoon (24 January) so we begin this week’s programme by reflecting on the 2021 theme, which is ‘Be the light in the darkness’. It encourages everyone to reflect on the depths humanity can sink to, but also the ways individuals and communities resisted that darkness to ‘be the light’ before, during and after genocide.  Our time of reflection includes powerful words from the late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, speaking on Holocaust Memorial Day 2020.  And for the first time, the UK Holocaust Memorial Day 2021 ceremony will be streamed online - at 7pm on Wednesday 27 January.  Visit the HMD Trust website to register, and get your link in advance of the service which will last from 7pm - 8pm on 27th January.

We’ve also got a requested hymn, chosen by Mrs Jean Collister of Andreas - Jean says “my favourite hymn is a very old one - I used to sing it many years ago and I still love it.  It’s called ‘He hideth my soul’    Jean says - “I thought the words might be appropriate for anyone who’s frail, or living alone, or fearful of going out …. The words are so comforting and reassuring when you’re feeling alone and a bit vulnerable”
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock
That shadows a dry thirsty land
He hideth my life in the depths of his love
And covers me there with his hand (written by Fanny Crosby)
If you would like to choose a favourite hymn, email me - judithley@manxradio.com - I’d love to hear from you!

A few days ago, nearly 40 million people watched the inauguration of President Joe Biden - and at such an important moment in American history - what was the rest of the world expecting to hear? - and most importantly - what did a loyal American want to hear?  On today’s programme, we find out - because American-born  Methodist minister,  Reverend Sean Turner has recorded his thoughts and first impressions following Wednesday’s ceremony.

Sean is based in Colby, and has care of the Methodist churches in the south of the Island - he’s been here for just three months, so I wondered if the inauguration of a new President - the start of a new era in American politics -  had perhaps made him homesick?  But actually, it was events earlier this month that affected him more deeply .. On this programme, Sean reflects on the new President, the challenges he faces, the way he might approach his term of office, and other moments in the inauguration ceremony which made a lasting impression on Sean.
