Current COVID-19 precautions on the Island mean that we cannot hold our usual National Holocaust Memorial Service - due to be held in St Mary’s Catholic Church, Douglas, this afternoon (24 January) so we begin this week’s programme by reflecting on the 2021 theme, which is ‘Be the light in the darkness’. It encourages everyone to reflect on the depths humanity can sink to, but also the ways individuals and communities resisted that darkness to ‘be the light’ before, during and after genocide. Our time of reflection includes powerful words from the late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, speaking on Holocaust Memorial Day 2020. And for the first time, the UK Holocaust Memorial Day 2021 ceremony will be streamed online - at 7pm on Wednesday 27 January. A few days ago, nearly 40 million people watched the inauguration of President Joe Biden - and at such an important moment in American history - what was the rest of the world expecting to hear? - and most importantly - what did a loyal American want to hear? On today’s programme, we find out - because American-born Methodist minister, Reverend Sean Turner has recorded his thoughts and first impressions following Wednesday’s ceremony.

Sean is based in Colby, and has care of the Methodist churches in the south of the Island - he’s been here for just three months, so I wondered if the inauguration of a new President - the start of a new era in American politics - had perhaps made him homesick? But actually, it was events earlier this month that affected him more deeply .. On this programme, Sean reflects on the new President, the challenges he faces, the way he might approach his term of office, and other moments in the inauguration ceremony which made a lasting impression on Sean.
