Abortion reforms receive first reading

Calls for measures to be considered by committee

Proposed abortion reforms in the Isle of Man have passed their first political hurdle.

New measures have received their first reading in the House of Keys.

There’ll now be a chance for debate during next week’s second reading.

The measures include allowing women a termination up to 14 weeks into their pregnancy and up to 24 weeks if there are serious health concerns or social grounds why a baby shouldn't be born.

Ramsey MHK Dr Alex Allinson says there will be much to discuss in the weeks ahead: (play audio)

It’s understood members will attend a presentation at lunchtime to hear arguments why the proposals offer no protection for an unborn child.

East Douglas MHK Chris Robertshaw wants them to be considered by a committee.
