Cabinet Office minister says technical can't count the population as well as the survey

The Cabinet Office Minister says the Census is still one of the most valuable statistical tools government has.

Manx residents will be asked to fill in the questionnaire on Sunday, which allows government to see how many people are living here, their age range and their background.

Government already has a wide range of data about those living on the Island, such as GP registrations, tax receipts and pension details.

But David Ashford says technology isn't ready to collate population figures from information already held by government:

In this year's Budget, it was confirmed £400,000 has been set aside for the process.

The 2021 Census found the Island had a population of 84,069.

Letters with details on how to complete the Census have been sent to Manx households this week.

The Census can be completed via a secure online platform on Sunday, while the Census Office will be open from Monday (27 April) for those needing an alternative way to respond.

The Census Office can be contacted on 685700 between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday or email census@gov.im, while you can also visit the Census Office at Customs House, Railway Station, Bank Hill, Douglas to drop off forms or ask for support.
