Drones can cause 'severe obstruction' and safety implications

Ronaldsway Airport had to be closed yesterday

Ronaldsway Airport says it was vital to close the airfield, after an off duty staff member reported sightings of a drone within the boundaries of the airport.

Legal restrictions prevent anyone flying a drone within 5km of the airspace without prior consent.

At around 2.30pm yesterday (9 August), all flights were grounded for a short period and emergency services were called.

Head of Air Traffic Services Geoff Pugh told Manx Radio that drones can have severe safety implications:
