Former police officer jailed for theft

Tens of thousands of pounds stolen from police federation funds

A former police constable has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for theft.

Kevin Williams pleaded guilty to the theft of £60,000 from the Isle of Man Police Federation Funds.

He was found guilty of stealing a Rolex watch valued at £6,750.

A joint statement has been issued by the Isle of Man Constabulary, Police Federation and the Attorney General's Chambers.

Superintendent Stephen Maddocks, who was the senior investigating officer, says Mr Williams was a serving police officer at the time and abused his position of trust in the most appalling way.

Chair of the Isle of Man Police Federation Inspector Kevin Quirk has welcomed the conviction and praised the dedication and professionalism of those who investigated the matter.

Prosecuting advocate James Robinson states such actions are rare "and the investigation and prosecution of Mr Williams... will maintain public confidence that individuals breaching the high levels of trust placed in them will be investigated and prosecuted."

Lead investigating officer Superintendent Stephen Maddocks has been talking to Manx Radio:
