Hiring more air traffic controllers 'not that simple'

Council of Ministers to discuss airport disruption this week

It's not possible to tackle the shortage of air traffic controllers at Ronaldsway by recruiting from elsewhere.

That's from Chief Minister Alfred Cannan following concerns over the recent disruption at the Island's airport.

The runway is currently being closed five times a day in order to ensure ATC staff have time for their mandatory breaks.

The Council of Ministers will discuss the issue later this week, but Mr Cannan says there isn't an easy fix:

Meanwhile, the Infrastructure Minister says the airport must work with airlines and the Isle of Man Civil Aviation Administration to find a solution to the current the flight disruption impacting Manx air passengers.

Chris Thomas has confirmed his department is working with the Department of Health and Social Care to ensure emergency patient transfers aren't impacted.

He says a collaborative approach is needed:

Earlier this week, easyJet issued an apology to its passengers, citing a range of issues for the delays and cancellations those booked to travel with the airline have faced, while one travel agent has been advising holidaymakers to allow ample time between flights.
